While I Was Sminking

Not much went down.  The Tribe won a pair for their third sweep on the young season.  The Clippers won their first two at home.  Mitch Talbot went on the DL.  Grady Sizemore homered in his first game back.  Josh Tomlin is 3-0, while Fausto Carmona finally etched a W.  Jason Donald can really play third.  Travis Buck is going to get sent down when Jeanmar Gomez (btw, his name is pronounced Jen-Mar, not Jean-Mar like the pants or like a Frenchman) is recalled to start on Tuesday.  Travis Hafner is mashing like the Pronk of ought six.  The domino effect on starting pitching will likely bring Scott Barnes to Columbus and, hold your breath, Drew Pomeranz to Akron.  Carlos Santana broke out of an 0-for-23 slump with a long ball today.  Get ready for the Kraken because the Indians play the Royals tomorrow night for first place in the AL Central. 

Details, details, therein lies the devil, yet I sorely lack the motivation to relay them. 

David Huff (2.12 ERA) threw five good innings today on short rest.  Frank Herrmann (4.50) bounced back from a shaky AAA return with a clean inning as well.  The mental aspect of a demotion based on nothing even vaguely resembling performance must be difficult to manage.  Frank is a good egg and a major league pitcher.  Hopefully the Indians' brain-trust brings him back sooner rather than later.  I think I just heard Chad Durbin "hurt" himself.  The Clippers offense came off of the bats Jerad Head (.391, 2-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI) and Luke Carlin (.381, 3-4, HR, 2 RBI), but the big story was that Ezequiel Carrera (.351) had to leave the game in the second inning after injuring his right arm making a diving catch.  No word yet on the severity.  The Clips are back in action at 11:35a tomorrow today (no, I don't know why minor league teams play morning games) with Corey Kluber getting the start.

Our buddy, Alex Lavisky, had quite the weekend down in the old KY.  Lavisky (.214) knocked 4-for-9 with a pair of gopher balls and six RBI to break Mendoza for the first time.  Dig it.

Our actual buddy, Tyler Tufts, did allow his run of the season on Saturday on a solo home run.  That blast, however, was the only damage in five hitters as Ty notched his 2nd save of the year.  As much as I hope that the Rangers move the kid up again quickly, I do secretly (not anymore) hope to trip down Carolina way to take in a Myrtle Beach game and enjoy the Indians' last season in Kinston.


I will bring you promised media from the Columbus home opener when today actually becomes today.  As far as the big club goes, just lay back and enjoy it.  This ride is gonna be sick.

Jack Hannahan was out of the Indians' line-up last night for the second consecutive game.  Should I consider these to be Jack off days?

Toledo's starting pitcher yesterday was Charlie Furbush.  Yes, Fur - Bush.  Surprisingly, he didn't stink.  And I though JJ Furmaniak (fur - maniac) had it bad.

I Need Singles For The Clip Joint

Oh.  A-my.  A-god.  The Clippers bullpen blows.  After the offenses scratched back to take a 4-2, the relief corp promptly stank it up worse than a homeless chick's panties at high tide.  Paolo Espino (27.00 ERA) was the main culprit and was tagged with the loss, but our old friend Jess Todd (12.27) came in just in time to surrender the game winning hit.

It wasn't the first time that Columbus tried to waste the superb start by Alex White (1.64, 6 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 7 K).  A Jason Kipnis first inning error and a Luke Carlin second inning passed ball led to two unearned runs and a 2-zip deficit. 

The O was baffled by the Toledo staff all night long, to the tune of 11 strikeouts.  Kipnis (.250) had 3 hits (RBI) and seems to be turning it around at the plate, Ezequiel Carrera (.313) stroked 2 hits and scored a run, and Cord Phelps (.406) continued his hot hitting with a single, a run scored and 2 RBI.  Chad Huffman (.077), on the other hand, regressed via an 0-for-5 (3 K) and left 5 stranded.

I will be in attendance for the Clippers home opener tomorrow.  If the rains abate for long enough, I hope to have some pics and/or video for you.  Don't expect to see it until Sunday.

Other Minor Points of Interest --

Not much to say.  Akron and Kinston got knocked around pretty good.  The most troubling part for me was Bryan Price's performance for the Aeros.  In taking the loss, Price (1-1, 10.13) allowed five earned on six hits, including a pair long balls, over two iinnings.  In case you've forgotten, Price came from the Red Sox in the Victor Martinez trade.  Yep, that's why I'm interested.

Down in the Midwest League, the Lake County Captains lost in extras to the Bowling Green HotRods.  BG includes St Ignatius grad Derek Dietrich.  DD played high-A ball last season and OPSed .759.  It is, then, unclear why he took a step back this year.  Derek is playing short (his natural position) for the HotRods after spending most of 2010 at third.  Perhaps the D-Rays brass thinks he needs some defensive seasoning.  I will have to look into it.  Whatever the reason, Dietrich is tearing the cover off of the ball.  Tonight, he was 3-for-5 with a dong, a walk, 3 RBI and 4 runs scored.  Through the season's first week 21 year old is raking at .478 with a 1.623 OPS.  Yowza.
