Honor Among Mormons

If, like me, you spent your Saturday afternoon watching BYU step through San Diego St and into a possible #1 seed in the NCAA tournament, you became familiar with the Cougars' 6'9" sophomore forward Brandon Davies.  While Davies' did not fill up the stat sheet, his physical play helped stifle the Aztecs' big men and produce the victory that vaulted BYU to #3 in the nation.

Davies has been dismissed from the team for the remainder of the season for an undisclosed violation of the university's honor code.  Brigham Young has a zero tolerance policy regarding the tenants of the code (outlined below).  Without Davies (11.1 points and a team-leading 6.2 boards per game) the starting 4 spot will either be filled by 6'5" Charles Abuou (currently the main 3) or 6'9" Stephen Rodgers (10.5 mpg, 4.4 ppg, 2.2 rpg) with seldom used 6'10" James Anderson (7.2 mpg, 1.0 ppg, 1.5 rpg) seeing increased minutes.  Hopefully this setback does not derail the Cinderella train.  And hopefully BD didn't get kicked to the curb for sippin' on some Earl Grey.

BYU Honor Code
• Be honest
• Live a chaste and virtuous life
• Obey the law and all campus policies
• Use clean language
• Respect others
• Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee and substance abuse
• Participate regularly in church services
• Observe the Dress and Grooming Standards
• Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code

P.S. The Saints have signed big ol' Shaun Rogers

Jon 3bler?

Jonny nailed a career-high (& OSU record) 10 tonight as the Bucks toyed with the SchNittany Lions in a 82-61 win.  Did I say 10?  I meant 10 in a row.  We think he might have hit the rim once. Maybe not. On any given night you can't know which Buckeye is going to step up and skewer the bad guys.

Proof of Gilbert's (nee Murphy's) Law - Just in time for Baron Davis' arrival, Antawn Jamison is out for the rest of the season (5-7 weeks) with his broken finger.

Despite his 4.43 at the Combine, I hope that the Browns steer away from LSU CB Patrick Peterson.  He carries 219lbs on a 6'0" frame and, while he will likely be an impact DB in the NFL, it's looking more like it will be at safety.

Also,
Julio Jones
Height: 6’2.75“
Weight: 220
40-yard dash: 4.39
Vertical Leap: 38.5
Broad Jump: 11’3”
Bench: 17
A.J. Green
Height: 6’3.63”
Weight: 211
40-yard dash: 4.50
Vertical jump: 34.5
Broad jump: 10’6”
Bench: 18

All this and Julio showcased with a stress fracture in his right foot. After dominating the combine, he seems to have re-established himself as a viable option at 6 if Green is off the board. I'll take it.

Cheers.

Check Out That Johnson

The Tribe has added a solid piece through a minor league deal, 1B/DH Nick Johnson.  The Yankee's opening day DH last season, Johnson's career has been plagued by injuries, but if he can stay healthy he will provide some veteran insurance behind Matt LaPorta.  Having yet to make a move after officially adding Chad Durbin, 2 players must be dumped from the 40-man.  One will be Shelley Duncan.

Former Indians Jody Gerut and Bobby Howry have hung up their spikes.

It seems likely that Jeremy Bonderman will sit out the 2011 season.  The Tribe's interest in the hurler has cooled dramatically in recent weeks.

The pitching thus far has been outsatnding.  Today, Carlos Carrasco, Zach McAllister and David Huff each threw 2 shutout innnings.

Cheers

Just In From the Desert

Travis Buck is 4-for-5 with a homer over the first two spring games.  Although, my gut reaction is "this dude sucks, why is he in camp," I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt until he stops hitting.  With the injuries to Grady Sizemore and Trevor Crowe (right rotator cuff), either Buck or prospect Ezequiel Carrera (Russell Branyan trade) is likely to be the 4th outfielder come opening day.

Fausto Carmona has been named the Tribe's opening day starter.  I'll be there and so will you.

Anthony Reyes, coming off of Tommy John surgery, has a sore right elbow.  Although this is not uncommon, Reyes is shut down for the time being.  Let's hope he stays that way.

Jared Goedert is 0-for-4 in the first two.  I'm not worried yet.  Also, he played 1B on Monday and will likely be the starter there if he lands in Cow Town.

Scheduled pitchers for tomorrow... today... 03.02: Carlos Carrasco (starting), Kelvin De La Cruz, David Huff, Doug Mathis, Zach McAllister and Chris Perez.
